Research is a driving force in my approach to art making and led me to the United States Superfund. The Superfund trust was established in the 80’s to clean up the most dangerous toxic waste sites that pose a threat to human and environmental health. There are 40,000 federal Superfund sites in the United States, 1,300 of which are on the National Priorities List (NPL). It is disturbing that some of these toxic materials persist in the environment well past their “cleaned up” designation. Personally concerning, are the two active NPL sites in the county where I live. I make the cut paper pieces because equal access to clean food, water, and open spaces should not be privileged.
